ADST 2026 AGM Distinguished Speaker: Dr. Melvyn P. Leffler

November 17 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
ADST 2026 AGM Distinguished Speaker: Dr. Melvyn P. Leffler

Please join us for a talk on managing the U.S.-China relationship by Professor Melvyn P. Leffler, followed by Q&A.

The Cold War is often used as an analogy for grappling with China today. But does the comparison really make sense historically? This talk will look at why it largely does not, while drawing out important lessons from the Cold War.

MELVYN P. LEFFLER is the Edward Stettinius Professor Emeritus of American History at the University of Virginia. His book on the origins of the Cold War–A Preponderance of Power–won the Bancroft Prize, and For the Soul of Mankind won the American Historical Association’s George Beer Prize. He co-edited the three-volume Cambridge History of the Cold War and has served as president of the Society for the History of American Foreign Relations, Harmsworth Professor at Oxford University, and on the Department of State’s and CIA’s historical advisory committees. His most recent book, Confronting Saddam Hussein: George W. Bush and the Invasion of Iraq, was published by Oxford University Press in 2023.

Please RSVP to [email protected] and indicate whether you will attend in person or virtually. The registration deadline is November 16.
