The United States Foreign Service Commemorative Coin Act S.789/H.R. 3537 would (1) commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Rogers Act and the establishment of the modern Foreign Service in 2025; (2) recognize the contributions and sacrifices of generations of Americans who served in our foreign affairs agencies, representing the United States abroad, including over 300 who made the ultimate sacrifice with their lives; and (3) highlight the value of the civilian tools of diplomacy and development.*
Proceeds from the sale of the coins would reimburse the US Mint and support ADST’s Foreign Affairs Oral History program. ADST is an independent, nonpartisan 501c3 established in 1986. Over 35 years it has produced a unique, publicly accessible collection of over 2600 American diplomatic oral histories covering 9 decades and widely praised for their authenticity and frankness.
Note: *A commemorative coin in honor of the 250th anniversary of the US Marine Corps in 2025 has just achieved the necessary cosponsors; the Marine Corps and the Committee of Correspondence, the forerunner of the US Foreign Service, were both established in November, 1775. Issuance of both coins in 2025 would symbolize the long partnership of these two services and their complementarity.
