In 2001 Helen Lyman began writing about the more humorous incidents she witnessed as the wife of an American diplomat. She observed the overseas life with a somewhat detached and wry view, through the prism of someone who never thought of herself as being born to the trappings of diplomatic life. Her book recounts incidents from South Korea, Ethiopia, Nigeria, South Africa, and Washington and stories about the famous—Nelson Mandela, Al and Tipper Gore, Hillary Clinton—and the not so famous, whom she loved, such as her first grade students in Nigeria. She wrote about her own peripatetic professional life, moving back and forth between the United States and abroad. From housewife to family counselor, to teacher, to computer trainer for the State Department, she records the human touches of each of those roles and in the process her own development. Just as she was looking forward to a rich retirement life, illness struck. Cancer came in 1987, with all its attendant exigencies, followed by seven years of remission and ending with cancer’s return. In those later years she wrote about her early life, her family, the loss of a child, and her dreams for herself and her country. The work is thus not a traditional memoir, but a rich journey. Near the end of her life, she turned to poetry and recorded her final thoughts in that way. Born in 1935 in San Francisco, California, to parents who had fled Nazi Germany, Helen Lyman graduated from the University of California at Berkeley with a degree in Social Welfare. After marriage to Princeton Lyman, she worked as a bank teller in Boston, Massachusetts, while her husband attended graduate school. She acquired a master’s degree in counseling from Bowie State College and worked as a family counselor for seven years in Washington, D.C. Posted overseas with her husband, she worked as a first grade teacher in Ethiopia and Nigeria. In 1991, the State Department hired her as a computer trainer. Her work for the State Department took her to China, El Salvador, Turkey, South Korea, Israel, Swaziland, and Botswana, as well as South Africa, where her husband was ambassador. The Lymans have three daughters and eleven grandchildren. Helen Lyman began work on this memoir in 2001. She died from cancer in 2008.

In portraying him, she reveals much about the role of a Foreign Service officer and their postings in Taiwan, Turkey, Lebanon, the Soviet Union, Guinea, Nigeria, Tunisia, Belgium, South Africa, and the Gambia. Against an exciting backdrop of civil war, political coups, and turmoil, the story reads like an adventure. It touches on U.S. foreign policy in the Far East, turmoil in the Middle East, “thaw” in the Soviet Union, U.S. economic assistance and the future of Africa, the coming together of Europe, and the end of apartheid. Although the author does not consider the book to be academic, she conducted thorough research in writing it and hopes it will interest a wide readership, including diplomats, academics, and art lovers. NICOLE PRÉVOST LOGAN grew up in Paris, where she graduated from “Sciences Po” and earned a law degree from the Sorbonne. She has master’s degrees in political science from Stanford University and in Russian studies from American University. After thirty years of diplomatic life, she concentrated on archaeological expeditions and published several articles on digs in Tunisia, Israel, and Russia. She sailed with her husband on the Black Sea, the Baltic, the Adriatic, the Aegean, and the Mediterranean and later traveled down the Volga by sailboat. She has four grown children and divides her time between Connecticut and Paris.

The murder of Her Britannic Majesty’s vice consul, a grim portent, climaxed Day One at his first post, San Pedro Sula, Honduras. Around this obscure consulate the Cold War flamed hot. For 130 weeks he and his family lived amidst savagery and the shades of Hitler and Rommel. Thereafter he was posted to Cairo, where Nile floods bring life and death, and he gloried in the romance of the great sand seas. Assigned to Beirut, he immersed himself in the language of the Koran and the certainty of True Believers. He glimpsed hope in a refugee camp attended by angry young and bitter old Palestinians and clashed with the angry intensity of young Israelis. Understanding the Arab-Israeli problem is not an answer, he discovered. A misstep in the British Crown Colony of Aden, where vain sultans and the jingle of medals on British chests exuded an air of the fading Imperial Raj, taught him that John Q. Public was his master. A murder on his last day brought him full circle. His life as a Foreign Service officer ended on the gangplank of a tired Italian tramp steamer, not on the Golden Road to Samarkand. John David Tinny served in Honduras, Egypt, Lebanon, and Aden, accompanied by his wife Josephine and three sons. He was serving as U.S. consul in Benghazi, Libya, when it was bombed in 1964. After leaving the Foreign Service in 1966, he worked for Occidental Petroleum and Conoco in the Persian Gulf and Africa. He earned a Master’s degree in library science in 1986 and worked as a reference librarian until 2011. Tinny married Harriette Josephine Hicks in 1950 after both had served in the U.S. Navy, 1943–46, Josephine in the WAVES, John at sea. He also swept mines in Korea, 1950–53. Both he and his wife descend from Florida pioneers and Revolutionary War patriots.
