Allen C. Hansen joined USIA as a member of its second junior officer training class in 1954, a year after the agency’s creation. As a Foreign Service officer for 32 years, he served in nine countries and, periodically, in Washington, D.C. He retired in 1987 and has authored five books.

Since September 11, 2001, U.S. public diplomacy has come under increased scrutiny along with renewed debate about its necessity.
